Window Treatments In The Home Staging Process

The kind of window treatments you currently have in your home may need some updating or making over when the rest of the house undergoes a professional home staging. Window treatments serve a lot of purposes aside from adding beauty… they provide privacy and control lighting inside the home. When it comes to home staging, however, window treatments are usually kept as simple and lightweight as possible, in order to allow as much natural light as possible.

What’s great about updating or investing in your window treatments during the home staging process is you can then take these curtains, drapes or other fixtures with you to your new home if they complement the décor or theme there. However, what home staging professionals would recommend is to keep the cost of window treatments as affordable as possible in order to minimize the risk of not getting your investments back.

Check out these home staging suggestions for your window treatments:

  • Go for light and airy. Choose fabrics that are translucent, such as for shades or sheers. They maintain some privacy, but don’t completely block out the natural light and the view from outside. If you have a great view of the backyard, or other excellent outdoor areas, you want to highlight that to potential buyers, so avoid opaque or dark curtains or blinds if possible.
  • Neutral and contemporary do the trick. In order to appeal to the widest tastes and preferences of potential home buyers, you want to select window treatments that are modern, fresh, and not distracting. Large thick curtain rods, or heavy cornices and valances are out; clean lines, minimalist designs are in. Loud designs and prints, such as animal type designs, zebra lines, polka dots, or floral prints are not ideal for staging the home because they only appeal to a very specific group of people while turning off or distracting everyone else.
  • Pre-packaged window treatments are your friend. While it can be fun to sew or have your own DIY projects for curtains and panels, but you may not have a lot of time in between your daily tasks and other home staging and selling responsibilities. It would be more convenient to go to your local home décor and improvement stores. When you go to stores such as Pier 1, Target, Home Depot or Bed Bath & Beyond, they usually have packaged window treatments and décor in stock that you can just buy and install yourself in a very short time.
  • Complement the home décor. The right selection of window treatments will blend into the general theme or décor of the rest of your house, instead of grabbing too much attention. If you are choosing subdued pastel hues for your living room, for example, window treatments should be light and quiet as well, as anything bright would be visually jarring and distract the viewer. Find a balance, and build on it.
